Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (November, 2000)
Authors: Daniel J. Elazar and Rela Mintz Geffen
Average review score:

Important Reading for all Conservative Jews
This book is the most important book for all leaders of the Conservative movement, from synagoguge board members to JTS professors. It accurately depicts the problems of the Conservative movement, but instead of leaving it at that, outlines numerous suggestions to make the Conservative Movement the authentic and halachic movement that it claims to be and has the potential to be.

A MUST READ!

Understanding Chicago's Design and Development
Few scholars can write with ease; and even fewer write without verbosity and pomposity. Professor Bluestone's book on Chicago's development is a source of invaluable information presented in a literary fashion. His scope is wide ranging, but not shallow in any respect. He deals with philosophy, history, personalities, the influence of men and movements upon each other in the city where 20th century architecture was born. Whether you are a scholar, an architect or just a buff, this is a book that offers information, knowledge and wisdom.

The Consumer's Guide to Psychotherapy
Published in Paperback by Fireside (July, 1992)
Authors: Jack Engler and Daniel P. Goleman
Average review score:

Therapy explained (finally)
Written by a clinical psychologist at the Harvard Medical School (Englar) and a psychologist who writes on the behavioral sciences for the New York Times (Goleman). This remarkably thorough handbook provides advice on many aspects of therapy. It covers how to decide whether you need therapy, how to find the right therapist, what to realistically expect out of therapy, how to get the most out of therapy, and how to tell when therapy isn't working.

A unique strength of the book is its lengthy discussion of various types of pathology and how they are generally treated. For each type of pathology, such as anxiety disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, depression, substance abuse, alcoholism, somatoform disorders, and so forth, the authors discuss (1) the signs to look for, (2) variations and complications, (3) what therapists recommend, and (4) what you should know about therapy (for that disorder). The book also includes a chapter on psychiatric drugs and appendixes that list self-help groups, therapist referral sources, and other sources of information on mental health care.

The Convergence of Theology: A Festschrift Honoring Gerald O'Collins, S.J
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (May, 2001)
Authors: Gerald O'Collins, Stephen T. Davis, George Carey, and Daniel Kendall
Average review score:

THEOLOGICAL ENCOUNTER --TRIBUTE TO GERRY O'COLLINS
This 2001 collection of essays from 22 living theologians is a celebration of the 70th birthday of a pastoral human being who is a renowned transcontinental scholar of our times. It is obvious that Fr. O'Collins' deep faith in Jesus Christ has personally touched each writer as they participate in his enthusiastic search for truth. The book is a theological treasure that will find a warm welcome in global circles. While I did not receive any new insights, the work tied together numerous concepts that are fundamental to Christian theology. I would highly recommend this "Festschrift" for Adult Lifelong Learning groups as well as for College courses. For all who engage in "faith seeking understanding," it treats many topics that provide stimulating reflection and discussion. It leaves one immersed in an experience of a lived community of believers. Happy Birthday, Gerry!

Country House (Polish Theatre Archive)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (01 September, 1997)
Authors: Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz and Daniel Gerould
Average review score:

Jane Austen it isn't
Transposed to England, with a few specifically Polish references removed, this is one of Witkacy's easiest and most entertaining plays. Like most of his best work, it's a lunatic parody; unlike some, it parodies only one genre, the "country house" drama of conflicts and secrets within a well-to-do family. Thus much of the dialogue takes the form of debates, with the mother's ghost, over tea and toast, over who her various lovers were and what they and her husband may or may not have done to her. The Geroulds' translation is as fluent as always, and there is a long and very fine introduction. An extra and unexpected bonus in this edition is the inclusion of several of the author's paintings and drawings, quite a few in colour. Like the play (and like most of the rest of Witkacy's work), they are grotesque, downright peculiar, and well worth a look.
